Chapter 4
Elena opened her mouth, before I could start. âIâm sorry about all of this,â She started, nervously wrangling her hands. âI knew nothing about it, I swear.â
âI know.â I replied with a smile. I heard the worry in her voice when she woke up and found me facing another werewolf. You couldnât fake something like that. A quick look let me made sure she wasnât harmed from the silver and I sighed in relief.
She smiled back at me, but seemed uncertain of what to say. Truth was I felt the same, and so we remained silent for a while, until our gazes crossed again we saw each otherâs hesitation and laughed, a little awkwardly, but it released some of the tension I felt.
I thought back to when we were children, how we always finished each otherâs sentences and I always knew when she was happy or sad. Now we were like strangers and I had to morn for that loss of companionship.
âIâm sorry!â The words were so unexpected that it took me a while to realize I was the one who spoke them.
Elena looked at me and I straightened my back, gaining the courage I needed to continue, to admit my fault.
âIâm sorry for not being there for you,â I rushed the words, fearing I would fail to say everything I wanted before stopping. âIâm sorry for turning my back on you, for not letting you explain. I should have. Iâm sorry!â
Her reply was unexpected and came in the form of a hug, as she reached for me and took me into her arms.
Her grip was tight and I enjoyed it, letting tears escape from my eyes. I let her hold me and cried against her body, thankful she still tried to comfort me, running her hands up and down my back.
I opened my mouth to speak, but her finger against my lips silenced me before any sound could escape.
âItâs alright,â Elena murmured, and I felt a renewed urge to cry when I looked into her eyes. They were so bright with happiness, joy and hope that I couldnât look away. It made my heart beat so strong I feared it would explode. âI could have explained myself better, or let your father talk to you, but I resisted, stubbornly thinking everything would eventually fall into place. I never told you I love you, or how you made my heart beat.â
She smiled and I replied in kind.
Only then did I realize what I had lost during all those years apart â the company of my best friend, the person who knew me best.
We held each other for a time, leaning against one another, me in her lap. It was innocent, it was warm and I felt happy as I hadnât in a long time.
âItâs so good to be your friend once again.â I murmured, closing my eyes and inhaling, feeling her scent wash over me.
âNo.â Her voice and its dark timbre made me hesitate, made me look fearfully at her.
